Chapter 18

An evening breeze swept over Brenna but did little to ease her as she and Sebris made their way toward the lake in Central Park, the designated meeting place with Eve and Reynner. Her nerves stretched taut, she tugged at her cotton top sticking to her damp skin, casting furtive glances at Sebris.

He strolled beside her, head lowered, his features expressionless as if nothing affected him—not the coming test or even her nearness—the man from earlier, who refused to take no for an answer gone.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, unable to take the silence any longer.

His swung a brief glance her way, expression remote, the dark streaks in his eyes eating up more of his pale irises. “Why would you think something is wrong?”

“Because you’re…never mind.” Her stomach twisting into a hard knot, she forced herself to concentrate on what lay ahead. Once more, she was moments from entering another realm, something humans had no idea existed, and here she was trying to get this cold immortal to open up, explain to her what had changed.

The memory of his mouth on hers flashed hot through her mind. He hadn’t been so cold when he kissed her in the kitchen, or when he picked her up, pressed her against a building, and rubbed his hard erection against her—

She swallowed, struggling to shut off those thoughts. Laughter and yells drifted from ahead, from several guys playing football.

The evening had lost some of the intense heat with dusk creeping in, leaving behind a tranquil atmosphere over the park. Yet she felt as if she were walking to her doom. “Do we go to Exilum the same way you travel from your world to mine?”

Sebris nodded, his attention on the ball game now.

“Have you been to Exilum before?”

“Why would I? It’s a place for exiled immortals.”

“I know that. But Reynner isn’t exiled.” Still, he didn’t look at her. “Eve said he chose to live there.”

One muscled shoulder lifted in a half shrug. God, she’d do anything for a hint of the quiet amusement that occasionally broke through his ice.

She rubbed the small scar on her inner forearm, tried again. “The Empyreans will all be there.”

“I expect so.”

He appeared totally unmoved. Sure, he was dangerous, she’d seen him crush a man’s bones with just a touch, but they would be walking into his enemy’s territory. Worry coiled her stomach into a knot. “You should have brought Xever or Taegér.”

Finally, those ebony-streaked pale eyes settled on her. “You’ll be safe.”

“It’s not me I’m worried about—”

“They can’t kill me. Hurt me, sure.”

At his utter lack of concern, she stopped, irritation stretching her already strung-out nerves. “What does concern you then? Do you even care about anything or anyone else besides Dregarus?” she snapped. “Oh, wait, emotions are highly overrated, right?”

Something shifted in his darkening eyes. “In my position, I cannot allow weakness, but I do care,” he said quietly. “I will give my life for my people.”

Yes, he gave everything of himself to his world, his people. But what about me, she longed to ask.
